The term "androgenetic alopecia" (also known as "hereditary hair loss") loosely translates as "hair loss caused by male hormones". It is a form of hair loss that is triggered by a hereditary increased sensitivity of the hair follicles to the male sex hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
