Where did the widow’s peak get its name from?
Legend has it that a widow's peak was thought to predict early widowhood.
However, today the term 'widow's peak' is believed to have originated from the traditional widow's hood (also known as biquoquet) worn during mourning in the 16th century, which featured a pointed front that resembled the V-shaped hairline.
Widow’s peak vs receding hairline: What is the difference?
When a widow's peak starts moving back more, it becomes what we call a receding hairline.
If you always had a widow's peak hairline due to a genetic trait, it might just become even more v-shaped or m-shaped over time. And if you've never had a widow's peak but begin to lose some hair at the sides of your forehead, your hairline might start to look like one.
It's good to keep an eye on this. While it's normal for some people's hair to thin out a bit and form a widow's peak with the characteristic V-shaped point in the middle of the forehead, it could be a sign of balding, if your hair keeps getting thinner.
Which hairstyles are beneficial for a widow’s peak?
If you have a widow’s peak, certain haircuts can help to conceal it and improve the appearance. Styling a comb-over side parting with a hair styling cream skilfully conceals the high forehead.
Short hairstyles can help to maximise hair volume and distract from the thinning areas. Longer hair can additionally conceal the affected areas and make the hairstyle more flexible.
What treatment options are there for a widow’s peak?
Treatment options for getting rid of a widow’s peak include drug therapies such as minoxidil, an autologous blood treatment or a sapphire FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair transplant.
Some people remove the widow’s peak hair to make their hairline more even. Whether done with laser hair removal or an electrolysis, we strongly recommend proceeding with great caution when removing unwanted hair since it moves the hairline further back permanently.
What is a widow’s peak?
A widow's peak is a physical trait that is characterized by a distinctive V-shaped hairline at the center of the forehead. Many might know it from Dracula or the Joker for example.
Celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Keanu Reeves or Leonardo DiCaprio with his slicked back hairstyle have sported the hairline shape, demonstrating that the hairline can enhance one's appearance if it is styled correctly and looks natural.
However, for some, a prominent widow's peak, especially when paired with thinning hair or early signs of male pattern baldness, may become a cosmetic concern.
What are the main causes of a widow’s peak?
A main reason for a widow’s peak is genetic predisposition, with a widow's peak being a morphogenetic trait that can be passed down through generations.
However, it is important to note that the idea of a single gene, whether it is a recessive or a dominant gene, determining the presence of a widow's peak or a straight hairline is actually a myth.
Besides genetics, other causes of this type of hairline include hereditary hair loss, hormonal changes during the menopause, increasing age, stress, unhealthy diet and certain illnesses. Incorrect hair care or excessive hair styling can also be the cause of a widow’s peak.
Hormonal imbalances, such as increased DHT levels (dihydrotestosterone), additionally play a role in the development of a widow’s peak and can lead to hair loss.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a metabolic product of the male sex hormone testosterone. Some men may have a hypersensitivity to this hormone, which can lead to hair loss.
Early recognition of the first signs of a widow’s peak and appropriate measures can help to prevent advanced androgenetic alopecia and baldness.
In rare cases, hairline abnormalities may be associated with rare genetic disorders which are caused by genetic mutations.
Those include Aarskog Syndrome (among other things, characterised by a short stature), BBB Syndrome (characterised by abnormalities in the midline of the body), Donnai-Barrow Syndrome and frontonasal dysplasia, which feature a widow's peak among other physical characteristics such as hypertelorism.
Are widow’s peaks an irreversible condition?
Widow’s peaks can be reversible or irreversible depending on the cause and severity.
Early intervention and comprehensive treatment can slow or even reverse the progression, while advanced hair loss may offer limited treatment options. Scales such as the Norwood Scale provide information about the stage of hair loss.
Can a widow’s peak be prevented?
It is difficult to completely prevent a widow’s peak, especially if it stems from a genetic condition.
However, there are measures such as a healthy lifestyle, stress management and the use of skincare products that can slow down the progression.
Questions about sparse beard growth
How long does it take for a beard to grow completely after a transplant?
The duration varies depending on individual hair growth, but a visible beard is typically achieved after 6 to 12 months. A balanced diet and the use of beard growth products can speed up the process.
Which beard styles are particularly suitable for men with a sparse beard?
The best beard hairstyles for weak beard growth are the Henriquatre, the goatee, the moustache or the five o’clock shadow. Since they require less hair they are ideal patchy beard styles.
Grooming with special beard care products such as beard oil or beard balm can further help to improve the appearance.
What should be avoided to have a thick, full beard?
To have a thicker beard, certain things should be avoided:
-
Excessive shaving: as a beard wearer, avoid excessive shaving as this can affect hair growth and lead to irregular beard growth. Grooming a short beard with a beard trimmer can be a gentle alternative to shaving.
-
Stress: High-stress levels can affect the hormone balance and hurt healthy beard growth. Therefore, try to reduce excessive stress and build reliable coping mechanisms such as a regular exercise routine.
-
Unhealthy diet: First and foremost, a healthy lifestyle always helps. An unbalanced diet can have an impact on general health and therefore also on facial hair growth. Therefore, avoid a diet that is low in important nutrients.
-
Smoking and alcohol consumption: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can impair blood flow and oxygen supply to the hair follicles, which can lead to weaker beard growth.
It is therefore recommended to reduce or avoid the consumption of these substances to minimise hair loss.
- Lack of care: Don't neglect your beard care. Regular washing, trimming and the use of beard oils or other grooming products are just as important for your appearance as your skin care as they can help keep your beard thick and healthy.
What else can I do to promote beard growth?
A healthy diet rich in biotin and other important nutrients, as well as the use of castor oil and other natural remedies can help to improve the patchy beard look and improve the shape of the beard before deciding on a transplant.
Can a beard transplant help to conceal bald patches on the face?
Yes, a beard transplant can effectively conceal bald and patchy spots by taking healthy hair follicles from other areas of the body and transplanting them into the affected areas. New beard hair sprouts and weak beard growth can be compensated for.
How can you get a fuller beard if you suffer from irregular beard growth?
In addition to a healthy diet, beard oils, microneedling, or a derma roller, a beard brush might reduce patchiness by improving blood circulation.
Additionally, minoxidil and other beard growth medications can help to improve irregular beard growth. However, these supplements only work for a limited time and might be accompanied by side effects.
If all else fails, it is advisable to consider a beard transplant as a long-term solution for larger bald spots or patchy areas.
Questions about thin hair
What effects do vitamins have on strong, healthy hair?
Vitamins play a crucial role in strong, healthy hair. B vitamins in particular, such as biotin and niacin, are important for hair growth and scalp health.
Vitamin A supports the production of sebum, which keeps the scalp moisturised. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that promotes collagen production and strengthens the hair structure.
Vitamin E can improve blood circulation, which in turn promotes hair growth. It is important to ensure a balanced diet with adequate intake of these vitamins to support hair health and appearance.
What is the best way to style thin hair?
To style your thin hair in the best possible way, you should follow a few important styling tips that are specifically tailored to your hair type.
Hair volume: To give your thin hair more body, it is best to use products that have been specially developed for fine hair. Mousse or mousse are great for adding volume to your hair without weighing it down.
Shampooing: Choose the right shampoo for thin hair. Use a mild, volumising shampoo that won't weigh your hair down.
Avoid heavy conditioners or products with silicones, as these often make your hair look flat and limp. Always use heat protection before straightening or blow-drying.
Short hairstyles: If you want to give thin hair more volume, short hairstyles such as the pixie cut or a long bob can be particularly beneficial. With skilful cutting and styling, these haircuts can add fullness and texture to your hair.
Long hair: If you prefer to wear your hair long, make sure that the lengths are not too heavy. Graduations or a light, layered cut can add movement and volume to your hair. Avoid heavy, straight cuts that could make your hair look flat.
Regrowth: Maintain your hair regularly and treat it gently to help thin hair grow back. Avoid excessive heat and aggressive styling techniques that could damage your hair. Instead, opt for gentle styling and regular trims to prevent split ends and keep your hair healthy.
What is good hair care for thin hair?
Good and proper care for thin hair includes the use of mild, moisturising shampoos, rinses and conditioners that do not weigh the hair down.
In addition, hair care products with volumising and thickening properties can be helpful. Regular scalp massages can promote blood circulation and stimulate hair growth.
It is also important to reduce heat-based styling tools and treat the hair gently to minimise breakage. Products with keratin can also counteract thinning hair and strengthen hair health.
How does autologous blood treatment help in treating thin hair?
Autologous blood treatment is increasingly being used to treat thin hair. This involves taking blood from the patient's own body, centrifuging it and then injecting it into the scalp.
Autologous blood treatment is said to promote hair growth by improving blood flow to the scalp and releasing growth factors that stimulate the hair follicles.
What causes thin hair?
Thin hair can be caused by various factors, including genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, an unhealthy diet, stress, excessive use of styling products and heat, as well as certain medical conditions such as thyroid problems or iron deficiency, but also androgenetic alopecia.
Permanent styling with straighteners, hair colouring and the use of hairspray can also promote thinning hair and hair loss in the long term.
When it comes to hormonal changes, the menopause plays a particularly important role in women.
Can thin hair become thicker again?
Thin hair can become thicker again! Hair thickness depends on various factors, including genetics, diet and lifestyle.
A balanced diet rich in essential minerals such as iron, zinc and vitamins can promote hair growth and improve hair thickness. In addition, certain care products and treatments can help to strengthen and thicken the hair.
It's important to be patient as changes in hair don't happen overnight, but with the right care and attention, thin hair can regain fullness.
To help thin hair regrow, treat your hair gently by avoiding excessive heat and aggressive styling techniques that could damage it. Instead, opt for gentle styling and regular trims to prevent split ends and keep your hair healthy.
Questions about sweat treatments
How does the excessive sweating treatment work, and what active substances are used?
The treatment involves injecting muscle relaxants into the affected areas. The active substance blocks nerve impulses to the sweat glands, thereby reducing sweat production.
What is iontophoresis?
Iontophoresis is another treatment for preventing excessive sweating in the armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis), but also on the hands and feet. Sponges soaked in water are placed under the armpits and a weak electric current is applied to reduce sweat production.
Which treatments do exist for hyperhidrosis?
Regarding your medical condition, several treatment options are available:
Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) is a treatment option that involves cutting the nerves of the nervous system that sweat excessively. It is a fairly major surgical operation performed under general anesthetic.
This kind of excision is reserved for really severe cases and often involves the treatment of the face and the palms of the hands.
MiraDry® is a technology used by dermatologists. It uses electromagnetic energy to eliminate the overactive sweat glands located under the arms, significantly reducing perspiration and unpleasant odors. The cost of a session remains very high.
Liposuction or suction curettage is a surgical procedure used to treat axillary hyperhidrosis. During the procedure, a surgeon makes small incisions in the armpits and inserts a cannula after local anesthesia.
The cannula is connected to a suction device that removes the sweat glands and other tissues responsible for producing sweat.
Oral medications such as Glycopyrrolate (Robinul), Glycopyrronium (QBREXZA), Oxybutynin (Ditropan) are anticholinergics that can be recommended by healthcare providers for armpit sweating as a treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Since they are prescription medications, they cannot be sold over-the-counter.
What is the International Hyperhidrosis Society?
The International Hyperhidrosis Society is a global non-profit organization dedicated entirely to improving the lives of people affected by hyperhidrosis.
The NGO can give reliable informations about the different types of hyperhidrosis, hyperhidrosis treatments and research. It aims to improve the quality of life of those affected.
What other treatment options exist for excessive sweating?
In addition to surgery and lifestyle changes, there are both oral and topical treatments available.
Topical treatments typically include antiperspirant deodorants, creams, or wipes designed for hands and feet. These products all include aluminum chloride. In fact, the effect of an antiperspirant depends on which amount and type of aluminium chloride is included.
If over-the-counter topical treatments have proven ineffective for you, you might consider prescription antiperspirants. These usually contain a higher concentration or more potent variants of aluminum chloride. However, it should be noted that it remains unclear whether there is a link between aluminum chloride and the increase in breast cancer rates in Western countries.
Another treatment option for excessive sweating is oral medications. Anticholinergics help block nerve impulses and, therefore, have a range of different effects on the body, which include changes in circulation, alertness, and sweat production. Some of the most common medications in this category are oxybutynin and glycopyrronium, also known as glycopyrrolate. Possible side effects of anticholinergics include a dry mouth, constipation, and impaired taste.
Which surgical treatments exist to treat excessive sweating?
There are several surgical treatments designed to destroy or remove sweat glands. However, many of them are primarily used to treat excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) and are not suitable for treating the hands or feet.
Liposuction is a technique in which a suction device is used to remove a layer of fat under the skin along with the existing sweat glands.
A variant of liposuction is suction curettage. In this procedure, a suction device is combined with the use of a curette, a small medical instrument with sharp edges used to further remove and destroy sweat glands. With this procedure, the majority of the sweat glands under the arms can be permanently removed.
While liposuction is quite effective, it has been replaced in recent decades by less invasive treatments.
Iontophoresis is a treatment that has been used since the fifties to treat excessive sweating of the hands and feet. In the procedure, the body part to be treated is put in water. Passing a mild electric current through the water then temporarily shuts off sweat glands. The treatment is usually effective but may need frequent repetitions. Also, it is not safe to use for pregnant people and people who suffer from certain diseases such as epilepsy or heart diseases.
Another surgical method for treating sweating is endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS). During this treatment, a part of the sympathetic nerve chain, which is part of the nervous system and runs parallel to the spine, is cut and sealed. This procedure permanently inhibits the transmission of the signal for sweating from the brain to the affected areas. Since the procedure can have serious side effects, it is typically considered a last resort if other treatments have not been sufficiently effective.
It's important to note that ETS can lead to compensatory sweating (CS). CS is characterized by increased sweating in areas which were not affected by the treatment.
Compared to surgical procedures, muscle relaxant treatment for sweat gland treatment has several advantages: The minimally invasive procedure produces good results with fewer risks and no downtime.
If you are yet unsure which sweat treatment might be the right one for you, you can book a free skin analysis at one of our HAIR & SKIN clinics at any time. Our dermatologists will review your medical history and discuss your desired results to ensure you receive the best treatment for your needs.
Which lifestyle changes can help dealing with excessive sweating?
The following lifestyle changes can help in the management of excessive sweating:
- Wearing breathable clothing
- Avoiding spicy food
- Quit smoking
- Managing stress
- Choosing a light-weight bedding and a mattress which is made out of breathable materials to deal with night sweats
Is excessive sweating dangerous?
While skin irritations can occur due to excessive sweating over time, the condition itself is typically not dangerous. It can become a concern if secondary sweating is caused by an underlying potentially dangerous disease.
An important factor to note is the effect of excessive sweating on the patient’s quality of life. The international hyperhidrosis society designed a four-point questionnaire to assess how much the condition is affecting a patient’s daily life.
Patients have to choose one of the following 4 options:
-
My sweating is never noticeable and never interferes with my daily activities
-
My sweating is tolerable but sometimes interferes with my daily activities.
-
My sweating is barely tolerable and frequently interferes with my daily activities.
-
My sweating is intolerable and always interferes with my daily activities.
A score of 3 or 4 indicates severe hyperhidrosis. A score of 1 or 2 indicates mild or moderate hyperhidrosis.
What kinds of excessive sweating exist?
There are two types of hyperhidrosis. First, there is primary hyperhidrosis (focal hyperhidrosis), which describes a condition in which there is no known reason for the excessive sweating. People with primary hyperhidrosis usually start dealing with excessive sweating early in their lives.
Secondary hyperhidrosis describes a condition in which sweating excessively is either the consequence of another medical condition or caused by medications. While primary hyperhidrosis usually affects one or more parts of the body, with secondary hyperhidrosis the whole body is involved.
Possible causes of secondary hyperhidrosis include an overactive thyroid or menopause, which can, for example, also cause excessive sweating at night. Additionally, several medications can lead to excessive sweating, ranging from antidepressants to antipsychotics, opioids, and thyroid medications.
How should I prepare for excessive sweating treatment?
Before the treatment, your physician will explain to you how to prepare for the procedure and answer any questions you may have. It is advisable not to consume any blood-thinning medication or alcohol beforehand to minimise the risk of bruising.
How long does excessive sweating treatment take?
A treatment session usually takes 20 to 40 minutes.
Is excessive sweating treatment painful?
The sweat treatment is often described as relatively painless. Local anaesthetics are used to rule out any potential discomfort.
What are possible side effects of sweat gland treatment?
Possible side effects include temporary redness, bruising, swelling and, rarely, bruising. However, these are usually mild and temporary. Sweat treatment is minimally invasive, and you are immediately able to socialise again.
How does sweat treatment with a muscle relaxer work?
During excessive sweating treatment, a muscle relaxant is injected into the affected areas. The active ingredient blocks the transmission of nerve impulses into the sweat glands and thus reduces sweating.
A treatment session usually takes 20 to 40 minutes.
Before the treatment, your physician will explain to you how to prepare for the procedure and answer any questions you may have. It is advisable not to consume any blood-thinning medication or alcohol beforehand to minimise the risk of bruising.
Besides treating excessive sweating, a muscle relaxer is also used for treating wrinkles.
Questions about filler treatments
Is hyaluronic acid filler treatment painful?
The sensation of pain is individual and depends on the area of treatment. Most patients do not experience the injection of HA fillers as painful. The use of a numbing cream at the injection site prior to treatment may be recommended by the physician to minimise discomfort during the cosmetic procedure.
Are results of hyaluronic acid filler treatment visible immediately?
Yes, the results are visible shortly after the treatment and continue to improve over the course of a few days. Within no time you can expect a natural, radiant complexion which makes make-up application and skin care a lot easier.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a volumising substance produced naturally by our organism. It is a major component of connective tissue and responsible for the hydration, elasticity and protection of our dermis. In addition to its healing and anti-inflammatory properties, hyaluronic acid reactivates the number and functioning of fibroblasts that are responsible for collagen production. However, as we age, our bodies tend to produce less hyaluronic acid, which can lead to a loss of volume. Therefore, this type of filler has been used as a skinbooster in aesthetic medicine for years.
Which areas of the face are suitable for treatment with hyaluronic acid?
Commonly used in varying concentrations, hyaluronic acid injections offer a versatile approach for treating nasolabial folds, marionette lines, smile lines and performing midface rejuvenation. Additionally, the injectable fillers can be successfully used for augmentation – specifically as lip fillers or for the enhancement of the cheekbones or the jawline.
Furthermore, they are applied to smooth expression lines and reduce dark circles in the under-eye area as well as for nose correction (rhinoplasty). The same goes for tear troughs and sunken lower eyelids which can be ideally treated with hyaluron fillers.
The treatment goal determines which layer of the skin the filler is injected into. In some cases, such as with advanced facial wrinkles, a combination of hyaluronic acid with other treatment options such as a muscle relaxant might prove useful. Your physician will give you an individual consultation to achieve optimal results.
Are there any risks or side effects with hyaluronic acid treatment?
As with any medical procedure, risks and side effects can occur. Rare adverse effects include allergic reactions and herpes reactivation. Your specialist will inform you about possible risks and how to minimise them.
Questions about skinboosters
Are there any side effects with skin booster treatment?
Using skin boosters may cause temporary side effects such as swelling and bruising. Slight reddening may occur in the first few days after the injection. Since those reactions usually subside within a few days, you are able to go back to your everyday life soon. Applying a numbing cream before the skin booster injections minimises any possible discomfort. Your doctor will inform you about all risks and potential side effects.
What other treatments are available for skin rejuvenation?
Autologous blood treatment is an aesthetic treatment which stimulates skin renewal by applying a small amount of centrifuged blood to the skin through numerous microinjections.
It is therefore used for overall skin texture improvement and skin rejuvenation while also serving as an effective alternative to mechanical peels. In contrast to mesotherapy, the applied substance is naturally present in your own blood.
While anti-aging skincare can only have a limited impact on existing wrinkles, products containing antioxidants or retinoids can complementarily slow down skin ageing, such as protecting the skin from sun damage.
If you are considering anti-wrinkle injections to address signs of aging, you are welcome to schedule a free consultation at one of our HAIR & SKIN clinics at any time.
Our doctors will assess your skin and discuss your desired results to determine the ideal treatment for your skin.
What ingredients are in skin boosters?
Skin boosters are precisely crafted cocktails tailored to meet various skin needs. Depending on the desired results, formulations include hyaluronic acid, amino acids, polynucleotides, and vitamins.
During a complimentary skin consultation at HAIR & SKIN, our doctors will evaluate the condition of your skin and discuss your desired results to determine if and which skin booster formulation is the most suitable for you, while also addressing any questions you may have about the treatment.
What are the differences between skin booster treatments and hyaluronic acid injections?
Unlike classic hyaluronic acid fillers, skin boosters are not used to increase volume. The primary goal of the skin booster treatment is to moisturise the skin in various treatment areas and improve skin quality. By attracting water and binding it in the connective tissue structures, hyaluronic acid gives the skin new elasticity and firmness, therefore counteracting skin laxity.
While hyaluronic acid fillers are used specifically to treat volume loss or deep wrinkles by plumping the skin, the skin booster treatment is more subtle and focuses on providing deep skin hydration and improving overall skin quality. In addition to hyaluronic acid, skin boosters consist of a variety of other ingredients such as amino acids and peptides.
Instead of targeting specific areas, skin boosters are applied to the entire face, for example to combat acne scars or treat fine lines. In contrast to that, hyaluronic acid fillers are applied via very targeted injections which makes them especially useful when treating a specific area, for example the under-eye area.
However, both injectable treatments are used for skin rejuvenation. They counteract the aging process by promoting collagen production and elastin production and supporting the production of hyaluronic acid in the body.
How often should skin booster treatments be repeated?
For the best possible effect, we recommend an initial series of 3 sessions at intervals of around 4 weeks (build-up phase). Subsequently, a refresher treatment is recommended at intervals of around 4 months. The durability varies slightly depending on the condition of the skin and the treatment area.
What is the role of hyaluronic acid in skin boosters?
Hyaluronic acid is the main ingredient in skin boosters and plays a crucial role in the treatment. The natural substance is injected into the deep layers of the skin at the selected treatment area. There it acts as a water reservoir by attracting water and binding it in the connective tissue structures. Therefore, hyaluronic acid leads to a significant improvement in skin quality and more elasticity in the connective tissue. Especially dense and permanent results are achieved by using cross-linked hyaluronic acid instead of linear hyaluronic acid.
Can skin boosters help in the treatment of acne or acne scars?
Yes, skin boosters can also be used to improve acne and acne scars. The hyaluronic acid can improve skin quality, reduce redness and smooth the structure of scars. Our experienced physicians can create customised treatment plans to achieve the best results for you.
Is there a longer recovery time after a skin booster treatment?
No, one of the benefits of skin booster treatments is that they typically do not require downtime. Most people can return to their normal activities within a short time after the treatment. Make-up can also be reapplied within a very short time.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind, such as avoiding to drink alcohol or sauna visits immediately after a skin booster treatment. Your attending physician will explain to you how to prepare for the procedure and provide guidance on the essential steps for optimal aftercare.

It is recommended that you do not apply make-up to the treated areas immediately after the treatment. Your specialist will give you precise instructions on aftercare, including when you can wear make-up again.
Are there any risks or side effects of treatment with hyaluronic acid?
As with any medical procedure, risks and side effects can occur. Your specialist will inform you about possible risks and how to minimise them.
Does hyaluronic acid filler treatment work immediately?
Yes, the results are visible shortly after the treatment and continue to improve over the course of a few days. You can expect a natural, radiant complexion after a short time, which makes applying make-up and skincare easier.
How long does the treatment take?
At your first appointment, the doctor will discuss your individual treatment goals and expectations with you. The duration of the actual treatment (excluding the preliminary consultation) varies depending on the region to be treated and usually lasts between 15 and 45 minutes.
Do I need a few days off or recovery time after treatment?
No, a longer recovery period is not necessary. The puncture sites of the cannulas disappear within a short time, often within 9-15 days. In most cases, you will be able to socialise immediately. Please note that you should avoid sunbeds, saunas and sport for the first 3 days.
Is hyaluronic acid filler treatment painful?
The sensation of pain is individual and depends on the region to be treated. Most patients find the injection of hyaluronic acid filler to be less painful. The use of an anaesthetic cream before the treatment may be recommended by the treating doctor to minimise discomfort during the procedure.
General questions
What should I do if I notice I’m losing a lot of hair?
The first step if you notice hair shedding should always be to consult a dermatologist who determines your type of hair loss and therefore recommends suitable treatment options.
Common causes of hair loss include hereditary hair loss, medical conditions, and the so-called telogen effluvium (which is a result of stress, as it is induced by pregnancy or weight loss).
It can also be a good idea to perform a blood test to find out whether a vitamin deficiency, for example an iron deficiency, might also be responsible for the hair loss.
We do not recommend taking supplements without an official analysis by a healthcare professional: better safe than sorry.
Regarding the treatment for hair loss, there is a spectrum of medical treatment options from oral medications on to topical treatments that have been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
In Switzerland some of them, such as Minoxidil, better known as Regaine (or Rogaine in the US), are available over the counter, while others are only available via subscription.
While those medical treatments can put a halt to further hair loss and therefore prevent bald spots, their effects subside as soon as you stop taking them. Additionally, those hair loss medications might come with side serious effects.
Another medication which is not a classical hair loss treatment but should also be taken with caution is Spironolactone.
Originally a blood pressure medication, it is used off-label as an effective treatment against hair loss. However, it can come with considerable side effects for both men and women and should not be taken during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
No matter which hair loss treatment you choose in the end: In any case it is advised to protect your hair optimally by using as little heat as possible and the right tools to reduce hair breakage and hair loss.
Your are unsure where to start with your hair growth journey? During a free hair analysis at HAIR & SKIN, we will get to the root cause of your hair loss and offer you a treatment plan for lasting results – such as the autologous blood treatment or the minimally invasive FUE hair transplant method.

Does hair really grow faster in summer?
Due to the supply of Vitamin D, hair can grow faster in summer. Accordingly, a shortage of Vitamin D (which is actually a hormone) can slow the growth phase of the hair down or even interrupt it altogether.
However, knowing the British winters, we probably do not have to tell you that getting your daily dose of Vitamin D all year round can be quite the challenge. In around 1 in 6 adults in the UK, vitamin D levels are lower than government recommendations. This is especially problematic because Vitamin D is not only crucial for healthy hair but also for your physical and mental health altogether.
Supplementing Vitamin D can be an answer to that. However – just as with other supplements – it is advised to first get a nutritional assessment at your physician. Here, they can determine which supplements are helpful for you to take.
What causes female pattern hair loss?
While hair loss affects both men and women, it can be particularly challenging for women. According to Harvard Health Publishing, every third woman experiences hair loss (alopecia) at some time in her life. Two-thirds of women suffer from thinning hair or bald areas.
Before seeking treatment for hair loss, a visit to the dermatologist is advised to identify its root cause. While possible causes for hair loss in women include iron deficiencies or thyroid disorders, the most common type of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia which stems from a genetic predisposition.
Usually, female pattern hair loss affects other areas of the scalp than male pattern baldness. For women, hair loss usually results in an all-over hair thinning and is most visible at the top of the head.
How can hair loss be treated in women?
Hair loss treatment medications such as Minoxidil have proved to help in restoring the hair. However, results are temporary and can lead to side effects such as skin irritations or redness.
A permanent restoration of full hair is made possible by a follicular unit transplantation. Herefore, donor hair is extracted from the back of the hair and the individual hair roots are transplanted to the recipient site. In a few cases, the cosmetic surgery for hair replacement can be done without almost any shaving. Our specialists are happy to discuss possible treatment options with you in a free consultation appointment at any time.
Thanks to hair restoration by experienced hair transplant surgeons, you regain a natural-looking, full head of hair with lasting results. Hair replacement surgery allows you to no longer be restrained to hairstyles that conceal thin-haired areas, express yourself freely and wear your healthy hair in whatever way suits you and complements your features and personality.
How long can hair grow?
The length of hair depends on the area of the body in which the hair grows. Since the growth phase for hair on the head can take up to several years, they can grow up to one meter. Eyelashes for example usually reach their maximum length at 7 mm since their growth phase only lasts for about two months.
How fast does hair grow?
Hair on the head grows from 0.5 to 1.7 centimetres per month. Facial hair, such as eyelashes or eyebrows, as well as body hair, does grow slower. However, the speed of hair growth does vary from person to person and is affected by different factors, such as nutrition and stress.
Which payment methods are accepted by HAIR & SKIN?
At HAIR & SKIN you can pay by credit card, debit card or bank transfer.
How much does the initial consultation at HAIR & SKIN cost?
The initial consultation with our doctor is free of charge and without obligation.
What form of hair loss do I have and how can it be treated?
You will find out which form of hair loss is present in your case from our doctors during an initial, non-binding consultation. As part of this initial consultation, a medical examination of your scalp will also take place, which is based, among other things, on our HairMetrix procedure. In our HairMetrix procedure, special images of your scalp are taken. It is not necessary to cut your hair in order to do the hair scan. Thanks to fully automated analysis in real time, the results are available for immediate evaluation. Based on this initial examination, our doctor will recommend a suitable therapy for you and create an individual treatment plan for you.
What are the most common forms of hair loss?
The two most common forms of hair loss are androgenetic alopecia (also known as androgenic alopecia) and diffuse alopecia.
Androgenetic alopecia:
- is hereditary,
- occurs in almost 90 percent of all men over 21 years of age
- increasingly occurs in women as well.
In androgenetic alopecia, the temples and the back of the head are affected.
At first, receding hairlines form at the temples.
This is followed by the back of the head with hair loss in the form of a tonsure.
Diffuse alopecia:
- manifests with progressive hair loss,
- is distributed over the entire scalp,
- occurs very frequently in women,
- is accompanied by thinning, feeble hair.
Causes of diffuse alopecia include:
- malnutrition
- various medications
- hormonal changes (such as during the menopause)
- autoimmune diseases (with the immune system attacking hair follicles)
- stress
Questions about hair transplants
Does transplanted hair ever fall out?
While transplanted hair is resistant against genetic hair loss, there are different scenarios in which transplanted hair may fall out. However, these should be neatly differentiated.
Usually, the reason for permanent hair loss after a hair transplant is a badly done transplant: If hair follicles are transplanted too deep, this leads to so-called buried grafts. This means that they die there and therefore cannot produce hair.
In contrast to that, it is completely normal for transplanted hair to fall out about three months after treatment.
This so-called shock loss is nothing to worry about and part of the process. The hair will regrow afterwards and remain with you for the remainder of your life.
However, you can improve the success rate of a hair transplant by combining it with at least four autologous blood treatments.
When booking them in a bundle with a transplantation, we at HAIR & SKIN give you a 10-year-guarantee on the preservation of the transplanted hair.* If this should not be the case, you get a free touch-up.
*We guarantee the preservation of the transplanted hair, the hair density cannot be guaranteed.
Can you still go bald after a hair transplant?
The transplanted hair is usually resistant to genetic hair loss. However, non-transplanted hair can still be susceptible to falling out. Therefore, a professional hair transplant will only be done once the hair loss has settled. Otherwise it could happen that the transplanted hair remains while bald patches begin to form around the transplanted area. To prevent this, treatment at HAIR & SKIN always starts by thoroughly accessing the state of the hair. During your free and non-binding consultation, our experts in hair transplantation will discuss your treatment to make sure to achieve optimal results.
What is the best age for a hair transplant?
In men, a hair transplant is usually not recommended until the age of 25.
Since genetically induced hair loss (androgenic alopecia) usually settles down at this age, a transplant in younger years could later lead to odd-looking bald patches around the transplanted hair.
For women, it might even be worth waiting until the menopause since the corresponding hormonal changes are known to trigger hair loss, too.
However, every hair loss story is individual. The one important factor is that the hair loss should have stabilised at the point of treatment.
Regardless of your age or if you are currently experiencing hair loss, we at HAIR & SKIN might have suitable other treatment options to treat your hair loss – such as our autologous blood treatment with natural growth factors.
Determining the state of the hair and the cause of the hair loss is always the first step towards a successful treatment.
During a free appointment at HAIR & SKIN, our hair surgeons will not only perform a thorough analysis of your hair and scalp but also extensively discuss your optimal treatment options.

Unlike FUT hair transplants, which may result in scarring due to the removal of a scalp strip, our FUE sapphire technique allows for smaller incisions while transplanting the individual hair follicles, thus reducing the chance of linear scarring and shortening the healing time. The use of a local anaesthetic ensures a pain-free hair transplant surgery, except for a brief discomfort during its administration.
We take great pride in the testimonials of our satisfied clients, which reflect our unwavering commitment to achieving the best possible final results. Our goal is not just to restore natural hair, but also to address each client's specific concerns with utmost care. What does a hair transplant cost in Turkey?
In Turkey, the transplant cost for 5,000 grafts starts at £1,900. Some Turkish hair transplant treatment packages will include accommodation in 4- or 5-star hotels.
However, for various reasons, medical tourism to Turkey is not advised. Time-saving techniques such as the FUT method make it possible to offer low costs of hair transplant for a high number of grafts but are associated with a longer recovery time and a higher probability for shock loss or buried grafts.
Additionally, Turkish hair transplant packages usually do not include aftercare if any side effects arise after the hair transplant surgery.
What does a hair transplant cost at HAIR & SKIN?
At HAIR & SKIN, we offer transplantation of 5,000 grafts by our experienced surgeons at £11,500. By focusing on only a few exclusive treatments, we offer excellent hair transplant results for more affordable prices than European competitors which make us the Swiss market leader for hair transplant operations.
In contrast to the FUT or classic FUE methods which are mostly used for Turkish hair transplants, we at HAIR & SKIN use the sapphire FUE technique. Thanks to its precision, this method leads to smaller incisions. The many advantages of the sapphire FUE technique include scar-free, dense and natural results with a fast healing time.

UK vs Turkey: Is post-operative care included?
While assistance from our competitors in Turkey usually consists only of an exchange of messages on WhatsApp (if any), hair transplant packages at HAIR & SKIN do not only include high-quality hair transplants but also extensive aftercare and personal counseling.
What are the advantages of hair restoration at HAIR & SKIN?
Thanks to our hair transplant surgeons with many years of experience, we guarantee a hair restoration with long-lasting and natural-looking results.
Hair transplants at HAIR & SKIN do not only include extensive aftercare but also take less healing time to begin with: While traditional hair transplants take 15-20 days of recovery time, we exclusively use the sapphire FUE hair transplant technique that only takes 3 to 7 days to heal.
Being the Swiss market leader, our HAIR & SKIN clinics belong to the best hair transplant clinics in Europe. With 19 locations and counting, we want to make healthy hair with a natural appearance as accessible as possible.
What happens 10 years after the hair transplant?
After one initial fallout, which happens approximately three months after the treatment, the hair grows back and stays with you for the rest of your life.
Combining the hair transplant with at least four autologous blood treatments improves the growth rate and thus, the success rate of the treatment. If you book them in a bundle, we at HAIR & SKIN give you a guarantee of 10 years on the preservation of the transplanted hair.*
If this should not be the case, you get a free touch-up.
*We guarantee the preservation of the transplanted hair, the hair density cannot be guaranteed.
What is the maximum number of grafts I can have transplanted in one session?
The number of grafts you can have transplanted in one session depends on several factors. These include the size of the recipient area, the density in the donor area, the tools used and the experience of the transplanter. At HAIR & SKIN it is possible to have a so-called "Mega Session" with up to 5000 grafts. The sapphire blade used allows for the highest precision and density, as well as a natural result.
Is there any risk of complications associated with the sapphire technique?
As with any surgery, there are some risks and possible complications associated with hair transplantation using the sapphire technique. These include infection, post-operative bleeding, temporary sensitivity changes and swelling. In addition, there may be undesirable scarring or uneven hair growth in rare cases. It is therefore important to get thorough advice from our experienced specialists before the hair transplant operation and to carefully follow the instructions for aftercare following the procedure.
What are the advantages of sapphire FUE compared to other methods?
The sapphire technique offers several advantages. The use of sapphire blades allows for more precise and even channels, which can result in a more natural appearance of the transplanted hair. In addition, the sapphire technique minimises the risk of scarring and infection and allows for faster healing.
How long does the result of the sapphire FUE technique last?
The result of the sapphire FUE technique is permanent as the follicles from the donor area are resistant to the hair loss hormone DHT.
When buying a hair bundle (hair transplantation including at least four autologous blood treatments) at HAIR & SKIN, you receive a 10-year guarantee on the transplanted hair.
How long does it take for the transplanted hair to grow after FUE sapphire hair transplantation?
It usually takes 12-18 months for the transplanted hair to grow back completely and for you to enjoy your new hair.
How long does the recovery process take after the saphire treatment?
On average, you can expect to return to your normal daily activities within 2-5 days after the surgery. However, intense activities should be avoided for at least 4 weeks to prevent complications or damage to the newly transplanted hair.
Is the sapphire technique painful?
Hair transplantation with the sapphire technique is performed under local anaesthesia, which is why the transplantation itself is painless. The local anaesthetic is the only unpleasant part of the treatment. After the operation, there may be some slight swelling and pain. However, this can be easily controlled with painkillers.
Can I drive immediately after my hair transplant?
For safety reasons, we strongly recommend that our clients do not drive themselves after a hair transplant, as the local anaesthetic can affect their ability to drive and their ability to react in traffic. Please arrange to be picked up on the evening of the procedure.
What is the procedure for the "Hair Bundle" treatment?
HAIR & SKIN performs the hair transplant exclusively using the latest and most advanced technique – the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method. This is a minimally invasive procedure that has many advantages over other methods.
Here, the hairs are taken individually from the back of the head, the donor area, prepared in a saline solution and implanted in the affected areas.
With a subsequent autologous blood treatment (at least four sessions at intervals of 1 month), the hair roots are supplied with essential nutrients through targeted application.
This stimulates hair growth in a natural way and supports the growth of new hair. Blood is taken from the patient and processed in a centrifuge. During this process, its rich nutrients are isolated and then injected into the affected areas.
What is included in the "Hair Bundle"?
The Hair Bundle includes a hair transplant performed by HAIR & SKIN in combination with at least four autologous blood therapy sessions to provide an additional nutrient boost to the hair roots.
In addition, there is a 10-year guarantee, which includes free follow-up treatment if the warranty conditions are met.
What requirements must be fulfilled in order for the 10-year warranty to be valid?
As a patient, you must strictly adhere to all instructions given by the HAIR & SKIN doctors. This includes avoiding direct sunlight, the use of sun protection, refraining from sports (depending on the type of sport, take about 4 weeks off), regular and controlled medication intake, etc.
How much does the "Hair Bundle" cost?
Our hair bundle consists of a hair transplant in the desired sections and at least four autologous blood treatments. This package is available starting at £8,000.
Who is a good candidate for a hair transplant?
A hair transplant surgery can be performed on any person over 25 with hair from a good donor area, a healthy scalp and good general health. If you are unsure about getting a hair transplant, our hair transplant surgeons are happy to evaluate your treatment options in a free consultation.
Is a hair transplant also possible without shaving the head?
We also offer hair transplants without shaving the head. However, there are only a few cases in which we consider doing so. This is currently only possible for clients with long hair and only if the hair transplant is for a receding hairline. In this case, the head is not completely shaved, only the donor area and about 2 cm of the recipient area towards the middle of the head, in order to insert the hair without a transition.
However, it is recommended to always do the procedure with a shaving if there is a desire for a good and lasting result. Therefore, it should always be weighed up with our specialists on a case-by-case basis whether a hair transplant without shaving is worthwhile.
At what age can a hair transplant be done?
Theoretically, there is no age limit for hair transplants. For example, hair transplants for children who lost parts of their hair due to accidents or burns, are a medical necessity.
Practically, hair transplants are not recommended for people under the age of 25, because in most cases the hair loss is not completed yet. If transplanted too early, the grafted areas are resistant to progressive loss, but the natural hair would continue to be lost. This would leave lonely islands of hair on the bald head if the hair loss continues.
It is therefore recommended that a hair transplant is only executed when the hair loss has stopped or is in a late stage. The anamnesis and the examination results are therefore decisive so that the transplantation is executed at the right time in life.
If a patient decides to have a hair transplant at a young age, contrary to the recommendation, it is possible that more interventions need to be carried out in the future.
How painful is a local anaesthetic?
The sensation of pain is subjective, therefore it is not possible to make generalisations. Most of our patients find local anaesthesia bearable. Others find it unpleasant. In such cases, HAIR & SKIN offers the possibility of anaesthetising the skin with a pain-relieving technique. In this way, the pain experienced during anaesthesia is minimised. If you are interested in this option, please ask us about it during your consultation.
What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is the transplantation of body hair. Hair transplants are performed for hair loss in both men and women.
Will I be able to work after the hair transplant?
In principle, yes. Mental performance is not minimized by the procedure. However, we recommend that you do not engage in any physical activities for 1 week and do not expose yourself to extreme weather conditions.
Can peaople tell that I've had a hair transplant?
Not necessarily. In one of the most common problem areas of men, tonsure, people won't notice anything after the treatment. The hair is taken out and put back in place without cutting a bald spot. Due to the localization at the back of the head, there is no need for a headband to prevent swelling of the face. And the patient can sit at his desk and work the very next day.
In case of a full hair transplantation in a bald patient, the red dots with the inserted grafts would certainly be seen on the scalp for 2-3 weeks and this patient would also have to wear a headband for the first few days.
Who performs the hair transplants at HAIR & SKIN?
Our doctor accompanied by our hair technicians and medical office assistants.
Do I have to wear a headband after the surgery?
It depends on the area of the hair transplant. In some cases it is necessary to wear a headband for the first three days after the treatment.
Can I have a transplant with long hair?
Yes! Our long hair variant is especially popular with women, but is also offered for men.
Is there a guarantee of success with a hair transplant?
Normally, after twelve months, the patient has fuller hair than before the treatment. In individual cases, however, not all transplanted hair may grow as desired, so that a new procedure is necessary.
When will I see the hair growing back after my hair transplant?
Slow grower or fast grower - your genetics depend on which growth type you are. In general, however, new sprouting hair becomes visible after about three months. Finally, after 12 to 18 months you will see the final result.
Is autologous blood treatment included in the hair transplant?
Your hair transplant includes 1 autologous blood treatment. If you wish to get more treatments (we recommend at least 4) you get a 10 year warranty on your hair transplant.
Why is autologous blood treatment so important after transplantation?
Thanks to the body's natural growth factors, autologous blood treatment improves the growth rate and thus the success of the transplant.
What is the procedure for a hair transplant at HAIR & SKIN?
On the transplantation day, you will first have another conversation with the doctor in charge. We will explain the whole procedure to you again and clarify any unanswered questions. Then, the treatment area on your head is drawn in, for example the hairline. We do this until you are satisfied. Then, the head is shaved in preparation for your hair transplant.
It is important to mention here that the shaving step is not mandatory. If you prefer to have your hair transplanted with long hair, we will be happy to advise you about the possibilities in a personal consultation. The next step is the removal of the grafts from the back of the head (i.e. the donor area). This is done in the prone position while your donor area is locally anaesthetised. You will not feel anything during the extraction itself. After the grafts have been removed, there is a short break. Then the canals are opened in the recipient area in preparation for the implantation of the grafts. The grafts are then implanted into the target area of the head. You can return home on the same day.
We will show you all the precautions and care measures in detail. However, we will accompany you for 12 months after your hair transplant. Together we will assess your results in at least 5 follow-up appointments to make sure you get the best result possible.
How much does a hair transplant cost?
You can find all prices in our overview here.
What are the risks associated with a hair transplant?
Swelling and redness are frequently observed after the treatment. Very rarely, inflammatory reactions may occur in the donor or transplantation area. The hair transplant using the FUE technique is minimally invasive and is performed under local anesthesia.
- There is no risk of anesthesia
- No visible scars remain
- The risk of infection is minimal
How painful is a hair transplant?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The local anaesthetic is injected with a thin needle at various points on the scalp. The anaesthetic itself is the only unpleasant part. However, the "pain" of the local anaesthetic can be minimised by using a pain-relieving technique. If you are interested in this, please ask us directly during the consultation. You will not feel anything from the subsequent removal of the hair follicles and their insertion into the scalp.
Is a hair transplant also suitable for women?
Yes. A hair transplant is suitable for both women and men. Particularly popular with women: The long hair transplant, which is offered by us for male and female patients. In long hair transplants, the hair in the problem area is not shortened. Only a strip at the back of the head, which serves as the donor area, is shaved. The size of the shaved strip varies according to the amount of grafts needed. After harvesting the grafts, the shaved area can be covered with the existing hair so that no bald spots are visible.
How long does a hair transplant take?
A hair transplant takes 2.5 to 8 hours - depending on the treated section.
What method of hair transplants does HAIR & SKIN offer?
We perform hair transplants exclusively performing the FUE method. With this method, hair follicles, or grafts, are removed individually with a very fine hollow needle. The follicles are transplanted to the new location immediately after removal. The small extraction holes of the hollow needle grow back within a very short time after the procedure.
Advantages of this method of operation:
- A complete shave is not necessary with the FUE method (but recommended). Only the donor area at the back of the head is shaved.
- We "harvest" hair follicles gently, without cutting out skin with a scalpel.
- No visible scars remain.
Which parts of the head can be treated during hair transplant?
Everything is possible, from receding hairline and tonsure to combinations of both - even full baldness! You can find out which sections will be treated during your first free, non-binding consultation. At the consultation, the doctor will work with you to create a treatment plan that is customized to your needs.
At which point can only a hair transplant help?
A hair transplant is necessary when bald patches can no longer be treated in any other way.
In some cases, when the hair is only thinning or brittle, an autologous blood treatment can already lead to the desired result.
What kind of hair transplant method do we use at HAIR & SKIN?
We exclusively use the FUE method (Follicular Unit Extraction) for a hair transplant. This involves the individual removal of hair follicles from the donor area, preparation in a saline solution and reinsertion in the affected areas. This treatment method is as gentle as possible, requires only minimal invasive procedures and there is no need for a complete shave. Don’t be surprised – the transplanted hair will fall out again after about 3 months, but they will grow back and afterwards you'll have them for life. You can see the complete result after about 12-18 months. Have a look at the experiences of our patients.
What do I need to pay attention to after a hair transplant?
After a hair transplant, there are some things you should definitely take care of!
- Avoid sunshine as much as possible and stay in cooled rooms. This will benefit your scalp. Sweating can hurt and affect wound healing.
- Follow the guidelines and advice of the treating physician.
- In the first two weeks after your hair transplant, you should avoid sports if possible. After this time you can safely start again with “light” sports such as yoga. However, it is better to wait four weeks before practicing any ball sports or martial arts, for example.
- Avoid alcohol and other drugs for at least two weeks.
Questions about beard transplants
How long does a beard take to grow?
Beard growth is as individual as our eye color. How quickly and densely the beard grows depends entirely on our genetic material. Here are some general guidelines for beard growth:
- You want a casual three-day beard à la David Beckham? Then you'll usually have to be patient for 3 to 5 days.
- 1 centimeter beard would not be bad? Then count on 25 to 33 days.
- A full beard of at least two centimeters in length has always been your dream? Then expect to wait 50 to 66 days.
- A stylish hipster beard with a length of 5 centimeters is exactly your style? Perfect, in 4 to 6 months you might have reached your goal.
- You want to break the current world record of 5.33 meters? A mammoth task: 36.5 to 49 years of patience are now coming your way.
Good to know: For a well-groomed appearance, it is not only a healthy beard growth that counts. The sideburns also play a role. Only if they harmonize with the beard, the final result looks fresh, youthful and vital.
What are the causes of bald patches and beard loss?
Just like the hair on the head, the beard hair in men lives dangerously. It may not be surprising that many men deal with baldness. But did you know that almost half of men experience sparse beard growth or even beard loss at least once in their lifetime? Identifying the cause can be tricky, as there are various potential reasons for hair loss. Let's explore the most common causes together.
-
Most often, genes are to blame for sluggish beard growth, better known as** androgenetic alopecia** (AGA). Because the hereditary or constitutional hair loss unfortunately does not stop at the facial hair. Almost 80 to 95 percent of all cases of hair and beard loss are related to genetic predispositions.
-
Hormonal fluctuations are just as conceivable. A testosterone deficiency in particular can have a negative effect on our beard growth. Tumors as well as inflammtations or injuries of the testicles are often to blame for the deficiency. The same applies to a congenital protrusion of the testicles, also called cryptorchidism. However, chronic stress or an unbalanced diet are also not to be underestimated.
-
A rarer form of beard loss is called alopecia areata, better known as circular hair loss. The special feature of this disease: circular bald patches form in the beard, about the size of a coin. The cause of alopecia areata is still unclear. However, experts assume an autoimmune disorder of the body. In other words, the immune system fights itself. It even actively attacks healthy hair cells.
Good to know: Stagnant hair growth is no longer an unsolvable problem. With the help of a professionally performed hair or beard transplantation, thinning areas can be easily, quickly and effectively thickened again. Within a very short time, the beard dress makes a fresh and full impression again.
How does a beard transplant work?
A beard hair transplant is closely related to the classic hair transplant. First, there is a detailed consultation with the doctor in charge. Here the patient has the opportunity to express his wishes, ideas and concerns. Then the doctor explains the medical options and draws the outline of the desired beard. He always includes the existing beard hair.
Only after these preliminary discussions the actual hair transplantation procedure takes place. Here the physician dedicates himself first to the donor area, which is usually on the back of the patient's head. The reason: Here the hair roots are virtually immune to the notorious hair loss hormone DHT. But that's not all: the hair roots at the back of the head also strongly resemble the beard hair in terms of structure and thickness. And the greater the similarities, the more harmonious the result.
Now the physician removes individual hair follicles from the back of the head and stores them temporarily in a nutrient solution. In this way, the donor hairs are only minimally cut off from the skin's natural nutrient supply, which greatly increases their chances of survival. In the popular FUE technique (Follicular Unit Extraction), the healthy hair follicles are now prepared for beard hair transplantation in meticulous detail and transplanted along the natural direction of growth.
Important: On the head, our hairs grow in small groups. Up to four hairs are in one group. With the beard it is different. It is composed of many individual hairs. And this is exactly what must be taken into account during transplantation.
In order to be able to transplant the individual hairs into the beard, the hair transplant surgeon exposes tiny incisions in the skin. These serve him, so to speak, as mini-channels for the hair grafts.
The beard transplant procedure takes several hours. During the entire procedure, however, the patient remains conscious. He can read, watch TV or talk to the staff. Thanks to local anesthesia, the procedure is painless.
And what about the regeneration after the beard transplantation? It does not take long either. Already after a few days the patient is fully socially acceptable again.
Beware, however: A few weeks after the hair transplant surgery, the transplanted hair may fall out again. But there is no need to panic. This process is completely normal after beard transplantation. After 1 to 6 months, the lost hair already grows back vigorously and permanently. The youthful fresh final result now lasts a lifetime. Unlike minoxidil or a beard transplant is not a temporary solution with possible side effects. It is a solution for the long term.
Where should get your beard transplant done?
Once you have decided that you want a new beard, the search for the right clinic begins. Where is your beard in the best hands? Who brings the most experience?
Many patients first think about Turkey for beard implants. The main reason for the boom are the low prices at Turkish hair transplant clinics. But the low beard transplant cost is not always a guarantee of quality. On the contrary, it is not uncommon for patients to be disappointed with the results later.
Understandably, many alopecia patients are nowadays looking around in the UK. Renowned clinics with experienced specialists, advanced techniques and professional consultations are a matter of course here. HAIR & SKIN sets a good example. Our medical professionals understand their craft. With experience, expertise and empathy, they help their patients achieve the beard of their dreams.
Questions about eyebrow transplants
What are the reasons for hair loss in the eyebrows?
Potential reasons for eyebrow loss include alopecia areata or trichotillomania – an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) characterized by the urge to pull out one’s own hair. Loss of eyebrow hair can also occur as result of physical trauma after an injury or as one of the side effects of a chemotherapy. Other than medical conditions, over-plucking of the eyebrows or bad permanent make-up can be responsible if your eyebrow is thinning out.
As a first step, a hair analysis should be performed to provide answers about the reasons for hair loss.
A permanent solution for regrowing eyebrow hair lies in an eyebrow restoration. In comparison to tattooing the hair, the hair transplant surgery leads to natural results.
Why eyebrow transplant and not microblading?
We believe that there are many reasons that speak in favor of eyebrow transplant and against the approach of permanent makeup or microblading.
The most important aspect that speaks for an eyebrow transplant is their natural look, which, according to experience, can only be achieved with real eyebrow hairs. In addition, thanks to their resistance to the hair loss hormone DHT, transplanted eyebrows do not fall out again and thus offer a permanent, significantly longer lasting and natural result.
Moreover, transplanted eyebrows also fulfill the protection for our eyes foreseen by nature, which can be mentioned as another notable plus.
Where can I get an eyebrow transplant?
Since the eyebrow transplant is a special procedure that can only be performed by a trained eyebrow transplant specialist, we currently only perform this treatment at our clinics in London and Basel.
What do I have to have in mind after eyebrow transplant?
The time after the treatment is planned individually for each patient by our specialists. You will be guided in the correct behavior after the transplant according to the doctor's recommendation. We will help you with the care in the beginning and instruct you in detail about the further process. It is important to know that the eyebrow must be trimmed at regular intervals, as the transplanted scalp hair in the eyebrow region continues to grow constantly.
How long do transplanted eyebrows take to grow back?
The speed of our eyebrow growth is as individual as our eye color. How quickly and densely they sprout therefore depends entirely on our genetic predisposition. Depending on the genetic predisposition, the new eyebrow hair of some patients can grow back in record time, while others take more time to grow back.
As a rule, it can be assumed that the hair grows by about 0.3 millimeters per day during the growth phase – which lasts about one month in the case of the eyebrows. This is followed by a resting phase in which the hairs in the brow remain but no longer grow longer. In the next phase, the newly gained eyebrow hair falls out for a short time, and then grows back completely. Here a little patience is required to finally marvel at the permanent end result.
Experience shows that it takes about 4 months until the newly formed hair roots begin to sprout.
Since eyebrows are shorter than the scalp hair, it can generally be said that the result of an eyebrow transplant is recognisable more quickly than that of a hair transplant.
What exactly is done in an eyebrow transplant?
The eyebrow transplant is closely related to the classic hair transplant. First, there is a detailed consultation with the responsible hair transplant specialist. Here the patient has the opportunity to express their wishes, ideas and concerns.
Afterwards, the hair transplant specialist explains the medical options and draws the outline of the desired eyebrow. In order to obtain the most natural result possible, the transplanter includes the already existing eyebrow area in the planning. He always includes the existing eyebrow hair.
Only after these preliminary discussions the actual eyebrow transplant procedure takes place. Here, the transplanter first devotes himself to the donor area, which is usually located on the back of the patient's head. The reason: here the hair roots are virtually immune to the notorious hair loss hormone DHT. But that's not all: the hair roots at the back of the head also closely resemble the eyebrow hairs in terms of structure and thickness. The advantage of this is that the greater the similarities, the more harmonious the result.
Now the plastic surgeon removes the hair follicles from the donor area using the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method. Immediately after the removal, he reimplants them one by one along the natural growth direction into the patient's eyebrow area. Thanks to this innovative gentle method, the incisions heal in a short time and no scars remain.
Important: On the head our hair grows in small groups, which include up to four hairs. However, eyebrows are different: they are composed of many individual hairs. Consequently, eyebrow transplantation and head hair transplantation differ decisively in this point. Therefore, eyebrow transplantation – despite a smaller number of grafts – also takes several hours. However, during the entire procedure, the patient remains completely conscious. Nevertheless, the hair transplant procedure is absolutely painless for them, because thanks to local anesthesia they do not feel anything from the individual treatment steps.
How much does an eyebrow transplant cost?
At HAIR & SKIN, eyebrow transplants are available at £4,000.
What is special about the eyebrow transplant?
The great thing about an eyebrow transplant at HAIR & SKIN is that no shaving of the eyebrows is necessary. The eyebrow transplant specialist transplants the new hairs between the existing eyebrows.
Only the donor area at the back of the head needs to be shaved for the removal of the hair follicles. In the case of an eyebrow transplant, the donor area is located at the lower back of the head, as the hair is thinner at this part and for that reason it fits better for the eyebrows.
Is an eyebrow transplant painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The local anaesthetic is injected with a thin needle in different parts of the donor area (back of the head) as well as the recipient area (eyebrow region). The anaesthetic itself is the only unpleasant part. However, the discomfort of the local anaesthetic can be minimised by using a pain-relieving technique. If you are interested, please ask us directly during the first consultation. This way you will not feel anything from the transplantation - neither the subsequent removal of the hair follicles from the donor area, nor their transplantation into the eyebrows.
Why should I get this procedure done at HAIR & SKIN?

Questions about autologous blood hair treatment
What is the difference between autologous blood treatment and stem cell treatment?
In contrast to autologous blood concentrate, stem cells cannot be drawn from the blood. Instead they have to be extracted from bone marrow or from fat deposits.
The use of stem cells is preferred for more severe injuries such as of the spinal cord. In some cases, the combination of both autologous blood and stem cell injections might be useful.
When can I expect results of the autologous blood treatment?
Already a short time after the first autologous blood treatment, the first results show – often after two to three weeks.
Suddenly, we lose significantly less hair. And of course this is noticeable the look of our hair. It becomes visibly stronger, more voluminous and more lively.
After the first peak phase, a little more patience is required. It is not until two to three months later that hair growth steps on the gas pedal again – but then all the more strongly. Hair loss is demonstrably reduced, leaving the coat with a much fresher and more youthful impression.
Fortunately, nature can now be given a little help. Those who have four to five sessions carried out at intervals of three to four weeks increase the success of the treatment. The hair not only grows faster, but also stronger.
The autologous blood treatment after a hair transplant
Often, the autologous blood treatment does not come alone. Many hair loss patients link it to a hair transplant – for good reason. The nutrient-rich blood concentrate spurs healing and hair growth:
The blood components increase the survivability of freshly transplanted hair roots after hair transplant. Fewer are lost. And the fewer that are lost, the more vital and fuller the hair.
In addition, the blood stimulates the healing processes and tissue repair after hair transplant. The micro-injuries subside more quickly.
Besides, autologous blood treatment strengthens inactive hair roots and prevents further hair loss.
When is the best time for the autologous blood treatment?
The golden rule when it comes to hair loss: The earlier, the better. It is best to start treatment immediately after the diagnosis of hair loss.
The sooner the damaged hair roots receive the rich blood components, the quicker and more successful the treatment will be.
The hair loss is already more advanced? Then the treatment requires more time and patience. The reason: The hair roots are already more damaged and need more regeneration time.
What is autologous blood treatment / mesotherapy?
The autologous blood hair root treatment is a completely natural therapy against hair loss and for increased growth – especially after hair transplantation.
The treatment is based on the body's own blood concentrate, which consists contains therapeutically valuable stem cells.
The highly effective therapy with autologous blood stimulates hair growth, supplies your hair roots with essential nutrients and promotes cell renewal and cell regeneration.
Uncomplicated, outpatient and, due to the body's own active blood components, without undesirable risks. For you, however, simply tangible and visible in thicker, denser, healthier hair!
How does autologous blood treatment at HAIR & SKIN work?
During autologous blood treatment, a maximum of 20 millilitres of the patient's own blood is taken with a syringe. The platelets are isolated from this blood using a special centrifuge.
Autologous blood extraction takes place in a closed system under sterile conditions. After only 10 to 15 minutes, the body's own blood concentrate is ready for use. Now it can be administered to the injection site.
The kits used are specially designed for this treatment and are used only once for your maximum safety.
How does autologous blood treatment affect the hair?
Three good reasons speak for autologous blood treatment:
- Autologous blood treatment can reduce hair loss.
- Shaky, thin, brittle hair can become dense, full and strong again following the therapy.
- Transplanted hair is more likely to grow in a new place in combination with autologous blood treatment.
What are the risks associated with autologous blood treatment?
- Since the treatment uses your own blood, the risk of allergy is zero.
- The risk of infection is almost as low due to our sterile working method.
- Side effects such as redness, swelling and minor bruising cannot be completely avoided and will subside on their own.
What are the contraindications?
Autologous blood treatment should not be carried out in the case of:.
Autoimmune diseases, blood coagulation disorders, hepatitis, HIV*, cancer, liver diseases, neurodermatitis, psoriasis, pregnancy.
Autologous blood treatment is also not recommended for acute or chronic skin diseases in the area of the scalp and face.
*Even though HIV disease is not an explicit contraindication, autologous blood treatment at HAIR & SKIN is not performed on people with HIV.
Can I pay for my autologous blood treatment on a monthly basis?
Yes, thanks to our partner company it is possible that you can afford the autologous blood treatment or transplantation even with a small wallet.
If you prefer to pay for the treatment in installments, it is possible from CHF 100.–/month. You can discuss with our partner company MF Group in which installments you would like to make the payment.
Do I need to have long hair cut before autologous blood treatment?
No. Hair length does not play a role in the treatment.
Who performs the autologous blood treatment at HAIR & SKIN?
Our doctor accompanied by the medical practice assistants.
Do scars remain after autologous blood treatment?
No. Autologous blood is injected via tiny needles. No scars of any kind remain.
Is there a guarantee of success with autologous blood treatment?
Specialist literature and practice show that autologous blood treatment noticeably improves hair quality and strengthens the hair roots. In addition, short-term studies show that hair density can be increased by 12 to 50 percent.
A positive effect is thus clear, even if the effect of the treatment varies individually in its strength. In the case of diffuse hair loss, the treatment leads to success in 80 percent of the men and women treated.
However, there is no guarantee that the treatment will be as successful as desired.
In which other areas is autologous blood treatment used?
Besides treatments stimulating hair growth, autohaemotherapy is used in a number of regenerative medicine therapies – for example in dermatology and in sports medicine but also in orthopaedics.
By stimulating collagen production at the injection site, autologous blood treatment is especially popular in aesthetic skin treatments. Here, a so-called vampire facial can be used to promote tissue regeneration for rejuvenation of the skin and improving its texture.
Due to its tissue healing properties, autohaemotherapy can also be administered to support wound healing in sports injuries. Those include tennis elbows or rotator cuff injuries which are very common in tennis players. Both types of injuries are classified as tendinopathy which means they stem from an overuse and usually heal again when the body is put to rest. Here, autohaemotherapy might support the healing.
While mechanisms behind the effect remain unclear, autologous blood injections are also considered a therapeutic option in knee osteoarthritis. Although autohaemotherapy is not able to heal the condition, evidence suggests that it can bring temporary relief for symptoms that go along with it – such as pain and stiffness.

Questions about medical needling
Can autologous blood treatment be performed in areas other than the face?
Autologous blood treatment on the scalp has shown to be effective to combat hair loss. According to studies it may be effective for stimulating hair growth in conditions such as androgenetic alopecia.
If you are experiencing hair loss, a free hair analysis at HAIR & SKIN can shed light on the reasons for your thinning hair.
Following the analysis, it can be discussed whether an autologous hair treatment or another treatment may be useful in restoring your full head of hair.
Can microneedling be done at home?
So-called dermarollers are microneedling devices that have even been created specifically for the use at home.
However, doing the treatment at home is not only less effective due to its shorter needles but also carries a higher risk of side effects: Incorrect usage of microneedling devices can result in scarring and other skin damages.
What is the difference between microneedling and medical needling?
While they may appear similar at first glance, medical needling and microneedling may vary considerably in their efficiency.
Microneedling penetrates the skin up to 0.5 mm which means that the needles only penetrate the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. The microneedling procedure can be performed by an aesthetician.
In contrast, the needles for medical needling usually reach deep into the dermis. Therefore, the treatment is an effective tool for long-lasting enhancement of the skin. It can only be carried out by a dermatologist.
At HAIR & SKIN, medical skin needling is combined with an autologous blood therapy to promote faster healing and efficiency of the medical needling.
Especially when combined with an autologous blood treatment, medical skin needling can effectively address a range of skin conditions, including uneven skin tone or skin texture, hyperpigmentation, and other skin concerns like stretch marks.
What is a medical needling treatment?
Medical needling is a minimally invasive treatment for skin rejuvenation and wrinkle treatment. After a small amount of your blood is taken and centrifuged, it is injected into the desired areas.
What is the effect of medical needling treatment?
During medical needling treatment, certain components of your blood will be used for their skin rejuvenation abilities.
The components in your blood are rich in platelets, regenerating proteins and growth factors which stimulate skin regeneration and collagen production.
As a result, the skin becomes firmer and fresher. Additionally, the skin looks visually rejuvenated and the skin structure improves.
While it can be used to treat slight wrinkles, the key focus of the treatment is natural skin regeneration.
On which areas can a medical needling treatment be performed?
Medical needling is used in the field of aesthetic medicine for skin rejuvenation and wrinkle treatment.
Slight facial wrinkles and scars on the neck and décolleté as well as on the hands can be smoothed with a medical needling treatment.
For more pronounced expression lines, another treatment method may be more suitable depending on the severity of the wrinkles.
How often is a medical needling treatment performed? At what interval?
Current studies recommend at least four treatments at four-week intervals.
Can side effects occur with medical needling treatments?
Only slight swelling and redness of the skin may occur after a medical needling treatment. The risk of infection is very low.
Therefore, medical needling is generally considered a safe and effective treatment for all skin types.
However, there are scenarios in which medical needling should not be applied. Those contraindications include:
- Active acne
- Active herpes
- Chronic skin diseases (e.g. eczema or psoriasis)
- Immune suppression (e.g. during chemo therapy)
You are unsure whether a medical needling treatment is right for you?
During a free skin consultation at our London HAIR & SKIN clinic, you and your attending doctor will discuss different treatment options to find the best one for you and your skin.
What is a vampire lifting?
The trendy term vampire lifting is often used as a synonym for the Medical Needling treatment. However, the term vampire lifting can also be misinterpreted. A Medical Needling treatment is not a lifting effect on the face like a face lift.
What do I have to pay attention to after a medical needling treatment?
After a medical needling treatment, the skin is initially still red. This usually subsides after a few days.
To avoid swelling and bruising, the treated areas should be cooled. Therefore, you should temporarily refrain from sports, sauna and solarium visits.
As part of the aftercare, you should also be careful with your skin care in the first days after the treatment: Nourish your skin with moisturisers and use gentle cleansers while avoiding ingredients that exfoliate the skin.
Our doctors will advise you in detail and explain to you individually what you should pay attention to.
Questions about the wrinkle treatment
What causes forehead wrinkles and what is the role of muscle relaxants?
Forehead wrinkles are caused by ageing skin, facial expressions (frowning), loss of collagen and elastin, UV rays, excessive sun exposure, free radicals and repetitive muscle contractions. Muscle relaxants can help combat these types of wrinkles by relaxing the muscles and smoothing out deep wrinkles. You can read more about forehead wrinkles on our blog.
Which areas can be treated for the muscle relaxant treatment?
At HAIR & SKIN you can currently treat the following areas with a muscle relaxant: Mimic wrinkles for example on the forehead, frown lines, crow's feet, as well as the armpits in case of excessive sweating.
How long does the effect of muscle relaxants last in crow's feet?
The effect of muscle relaxants used to treat crow's feet can generally last several months.
However, the exact duration varies from person to person and regular reminders are needed to maintain the results. These regular recalls slow down the ageing process and smooth out annoying fine lines over the long term.
What do I have to consider before a muscle relaxant treatment?
Muscle relaxant treatment requires no downtime, allowing you to resume your everyday life immediately. However, there are a few things to consider in the days before and after the treatment. For example, it is advisable not to consume any blood-thinning medication or alcohol beforehand to minimise the risk of side effects such as as bruising. Before the treatment, your physician will explain to you how to prepare for the procedure and answer any questions you may have.
At HAIR & SKIN, your doctor will guide you through all the steps of the treatment, carefully discussing the desired outcome while ensuring that your face retains its elasticity and achieves a youthful appearance.
How can I prevent the formation of wrinkles?
While skincare has limited capacity in treating existing wrinkles, it is an effective tool for combating early signs of aging and slowing down the aging process.
Anti-aging creams containing antioxidants can protect the skin from environmental damage by combating free-radical damage. It is important that these products contain a variety of stable antioxidants.
Other than that, topical Vitamin A, also known as retinoid, has proven to be worth the hype by boosting the production of collagen and thus lead to a younger appearance. Consistency is key here: It takes three to six months to see first results and twelve months to observe the full effects. Additionally, retionoids might make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure – which leads us straight to the next point.
According to a study published in the magazine Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, UV rays are responsible for up to 80 percent of visible skin ageing, depending on skintype.
While sun protection is crucial on sunny days, a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 for everyday use should be a staple piece in your bathroom cabinet to protect your skin from sun damage.
While these measures and treatments will neither completely halt skin aging nor provide immediate results, they can effectively slow it down and help prevent the development of deep wrinkles. Combining effective anti-aging skincare with muscle relaxant or filler treatments can be a great way to achieve smooth, plump skin that maintains a natural appearance.
Which other treatment options can be used for skin rejuvenation?
Various cosmetic treatments can reduce the appearance of fine lines, the appearance of wrinkles, and creases. These include chemical peels and physical exfoliating procedures, with the two most common options being dermabrasion and laser treatment (also known as laser skin resurfacing). A more invasive option is the facelift.
In contrast to that, we at HAIR & SKIN have decided to only offer minimally invasive treatments with maximally natural results. Our injectable treatments include muscle relaxers as well as hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.
For how long does the wrinkle treatment work?
The effect of the substance lasts 4-6 months, depending on the patient, the injection site, the dose and the specific formulation of the substance used. The treatment can be repeated as often as desired.
Which areas can be treated with a muscle relaxant?
At HAIR & SKIN you can currently treat the following areas with a muscle relaxant: Mimic wrinkles for example on the forehead, frown lines, crow's feet, as well as the armpits in case of excessive sweating.
Can side effects occur with muscle relaxant treatments?
Side effects of the injected susbtance include the following reactions. It is important to note that all side effects - like the effects of the treatment - are temporary. There are no long-term side effects.
- Swelling or bruising at the injection site
- Itching
- Mild headache
- Flu-like symptoms
- Unwanted impairment of muscle function
- Focal facial paralysis
- For upper face injections: drooping eyebrows or eyelids (brow ptosis or blepharoptosis), lateral elevation of eyebrows (Mephisto/"Mr. Spock" eyebrows), diplopia, ectropion, drooping of lower eyelids, epiphora (excessive tearing), decreased strength of eye closure, dry eyes, tension or heaviness in forehead or eyebrows, muscle spasms in forehead
- Rarely: Shortness of breath, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, allergic reactions.
Is one able to work and socialise after a wrinkle treatment?
The only thing that can be seen after the treatment is the small injection sites and rarely the smallest bruises if fine skin vessels have been damaged. These changes can be easily covered up if desired and will be completely gone after a few days at the latest. Consequently, neither the ability to work nor the ability to socialise is restricted by the treatment.
What should one pay attention to after a wrinkle treatment?
After the treatment, you are immediately fit for work again. You should not massage the injection sites for the first four hours. Avoid saunas, sunbathing, heavy exercise and sports on the day of treatment. Showering, gentle facial cleansing and the application of light make-up, on the other hand, are possible immediately without any problems. You should refrain from drug consumption (including alcohol and nicotine) for two days after the treatment in order not to impair wound healing. You should also avoid sleeping on your face for the first night.
Who should not have a wrinkle treatment?
The treatment should not be done if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to neurotoxine or any of the other ingredients (human albumin, sucrose, saline). if you have a general muscle activity disorder (e.g. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, myopathies) or suffer from gross motor weakness in the treatment area (e.g. Bell's palsy) if your livelihood depends on facial expressions (e.g. actors, singers) if there is an infection or inflammation in the area of the intended injection site, or during a urinary tract infection during pregnancy or breastfeeding if you have a history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring.
Tell your doctor if: if you have any form of blood clotting disorder and/or if you are being treated with substances that inhibit blood clotting (anticoagulants). if you suffer from severe weakness or tissue atrophy of the muscle into which the medicine is to be injected. If you suffer from conditions that interfere with the interaction of nerves and skeletal muscles (peripheral neuromuscular dysfunction). If you suffer or have suffered from dysphagia. If you have had difficulty with a muscle relaxant injection in the past. If you have had or are planning to have an operation.
What is the procedure for the wrinkle treatment?
First of all, the patient and doctor decide on the area and the intensity of the treatment.
Then your face is cleaned and disinfected. Next, the injection points are planned and marked. Finally, the substance is injected into the muscle to temporarily immobilise the muscle and thus smoothen the skin.
How does a muscle relaxant work in wrinkle treatment?
Due to constant activity of the mimic muscles during facial expressions, facial wrinkles can form in the overlying skin over the course of a lifetime, for example frown lines above the nose, forehead lines or laugh lines at the corners of the eyes (known as crow's feet).
Since the injection reduces muscle contraction by blocking the messenger substance needed for this, muscle relaxant injections into the affected muscles lead to relaxation. Fine lines disappear and wrinkles smooth out or vanish, depending on their depth.
