In a hair transplant, active, hormone-resistant hair follicles are taken from a region densely populated with hair ('donor area', often at the lower back of the head) and grafted to the bald areas ('recipient area', often at the top and front of the head). After successful growth in the recipient area, the grafted hair follicles produce hair for life.
