Fynzur Spray: The New Cure for Hair Loss?

The list of potential side effects on the package insert for hair loss medication is often long – and over-the-counter products are hardly ever effective.

The topical solution, Fynzur Spray, is a new hair loss medication that has been launched on the Swiss market. Could it offer a solution to hair loss?

Find out how the spray works, who it is suitable for, and what other alternative treatment options there might be.

What is Fynzur for men?

Fynzur Spray is a medication for treating mild to moderate androgenetic hair loss, more commonly known as male pattern hair loss or male pattern baldness affecting the hairline. It is intended for use in men between the ages of 18 and 41 to regrow hair and increase hair density.

One pack of Fynzur from the pharmaceutical manufacturer Laboratoires bailleul s.a (PZN code: 18230404, ATC code: D11AX10) contains 18 ml of spray intended to be applied to the skin for hair regrowth. Fynzur is not yet FDA-approved as a topical treatment.

In addition to the actual active ingredient, the spray contains adjuvants such as the coating agent hydroxypropyl chitosan, the alcoholic substance propylene glycol, and purified water.

How Fynzur can help with genetic hair loss

Genetic hair loss, also known as hereditary hair loss or androgenetic alopecia, is closely linked to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT levels are derived from the conversion of testosterone and can cause hair loss.

Specifically, androgenetic alopecia is triggered either by higher levels of DHT production or a hypersensitivity to DHT. In both scenarios, the result is the same: the hair growth phase of the hair is shortened, while the hair follicles are reduced in size and undersupplied, leading to a lesser hair count.

That is where Fynzur comes in for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: DHT can only be formed from testosterone with the help of a very specific enzyme: 5-alpha reductase. As a reductase inhibitor, or DHT blocker, Fynzur inhibits the enzyme and thus the conversion of the hormone testosterone into dyhidrotestosterone. DHT is produced in the body by converting testosterone in the hair follicles of the scalp DHT, and it binds to receptors in the scalp. High levels of DHT can lead to hair loss.

The topical application Fynzur can therefore temporarily stop hair loss and promote the growth of new hair. However, this potential effect only applies for the duration of use.

Who is Fynzur suitable for?

Fynzur is intended to be used by male patients between the ages of 18 and 41. However, the medication should not be used if there is a hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.

Contraindications apply to men and women. For women who may become pregnant, Fynzur is not approved for these cases. Consequently, the use of Fynzur is also not permitted during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Special precautions are required for women, children, and adolescents. These individuals should not come into contact with treated parts of the body or with surfaces that have been sprayed with the topical formulation, as the preparation can be transferred on contact with the treated area.

If contact does occur despite precautionary measures, the affected area should be thoroughly rinsed.

Prescription for Fynzur

Fynzur is a prescription medication and is usually prescribed by your general healthcare practitioner, dermatologist, or urologist. As a patient seeking a treatment plan, you will receive a package size of 1x18 ml Fynzur when you present the original prescription or e-prescription.

You can either redeem the prescription on-site or upload it online to place the medicine in the shopping cart of an online pharmacy. Many online pharmacies offer free delivery.

Due to its mechanism of action as a DHT blocker, Fynzur is only effective in cases of hereditary hair loss or androgenic alopecia. If your hair loss is due to another cause, you will not benefit from the potential effects, but you will be exposed to possible side effects. It is important to be aware of potential side effects which can include systemic side effects as well as sexual dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction, among other sexual side effects.

This makes it all the more important to determine the exact cause of your hair loss before starting treatment. At HAIR & SKIN, you can easily arrange a comprehensive hair analysis via HairScan that includes a free consultation.

How to use Fynzur

Your doctor may prescribe a dose of between one and four sprays a day. You should not use more than a maximum of four sprays of the topical application per day.

One pack contains 180 sprays, which is enough to last for 45 days to almost half a year, depending on the recommended dosage.

When does Fynzur start to work?

It can take up to 3 months for Fynzur to start working. It is important that you use the preparation for the recommended length of time.

What's new about the active ingredient

The anti-DHT effect of the active ingredient used in Fynzur is already used by other hair loss medications, both off-label and FDA-approved, although these are taken orally. Oral intake increases exposure to the active ingredient and therefore the likelihood of potential side effects.

What is new about Fynzur is the dosage form – at least in Switzerland. In Italy, the product has already been on the market for several years under the name Caretopic. In both cases, the active ingredient is absorbed through direct contact with the part of the scalp that is being treated.

According to previous clinical trials and studies, Fynzur is as effective as oral medication, but the targeted application results in a significantly lower concentration of active ingredients in the body.

It is assumed that the side effects are correspondingly lower. Whether this is actually the case or a placebo remains to be seen in systematic reviews, clinical trials, and tests.

According to the package leaflet, the following side effects may occur when using Fynzur:

·      Reduced libido

·      Itching (pruritus)

·      Redness (erythema)

·      Palpitations

If you have any questions about risks and side effects, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Using Fynzur could interfere with tests used to detect early-stage prostate cancer

Fynzur could effect the prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Its serum level is measured for detecting prostate cancer at an early stage.

In clinical studies in which the drug with the same active ingredient was used as an oral application, PSA levels fell significantly after 12 months of use.

Although the body is exposed to a significantly lower concentration of the active ingredient when the drug is applied topically, there are no data to date that points to a potential impact on PSA levels.

Therefore, it is important to consider the possibility that using Fynzur spray could also distort PSA levels.

Conclusion: Fynzur is effective despite some limitations

Fynzur hair growth spray can temporarily prevent further hair loss while promoting hair growth. However, any effect only lasts for the duration in which it is used.

When sprayed, the body is exposed to significantly lower quantities of the active ingredient compared to oral applications.

It is therefore assumed that there are fewer side effects compared to medication intended for internal use. However, this assumption still needs to be confirmed by medium and long-term studies.

Although both men and women can be affected by genetic hair loss, Fynzur is only suitable for men - and even here only in a limited age group.

Alternative treatments to Fynzur

Autologous blood treatment offers a low risk of side effects. It uses the body's own growth factors to promote hair growth and can also be combined with a hair transplant.
